Hi Scroll friends,
We’re striving to make Scroll delegates known around the crypto-verse for our rigor and accountability. That’s the practice that will grow confidence in our ecosystem.
Many DAOs struggle with engaging delegates to contribute meaningfully to the conversation. Here at Scroll we have the opportunity to cultivate a different kind of reputation: one for being competent, thoughtful, rigorous, transparent, and precise.
As part of this experimentation with rigor and accountability, I’d like to briefly introduce you to the ritual of writing rationales.
The Ritual of Writing Rationales
A rationale (“rah-shun-al”) is “a set of reasons or a logical basis for a course of action or a particular belief.”
High quality delegates try to always publish a rationale for their voting decisions.
Here’s an example of a great rationale in the forums written by @SEEDGov:
However, there are many known shortcomings with Governance By Discourse Discussion:
- Comments aren’t ranked in terms of their importance, (e.g. when a comment is resolved it stays at the top of the list)
- There’s no way to track which delegates offer the most valuable contributions (making rewarding high quality delegates difficult)
- Duplicate issues are raised across the conversation and have to each be resolved independently.
- A delegate’s history of their beliefs isn’t tracked (e.g. did they foresee issues with a proposal before it occurred)
The Negation Game is a tool for making rationales, and it’s new just for Scroll!
Here’s what a completed rationale looks like:

We’re in the early days of experimenting with this tool as a way for us delegates to earn more trust and delegation from token holders. I personally commit to publish a rationale for each of my upcoming votes. Please join me!
